A long history and a huge fanbase don’t always mean that a company is the absolute best in the industry. However, there’s a reason why independent reviewers consider Avira to be one of the best antivirus programs of 2022.
Although it’s relatively lightweight, it has everything you’d expect from a premium antivirus suite, including real-time scanning and protection from all kinds of malware - ransomware, adware, spyware, hacking, phishing, rootkits, trojans, and worms. Avira boasts an anti-malware feature that offers real-time protection, but also goes a step further with its malware removal tool. In the last year alone, the malware removal tool has successfully repaired more than 90 million infected files.
Ransomware is probably one of the most dangerous and prevalent online threats in recent years. It works by first encrypting the victim’s files and holding it hostage until a certain amount of money is wired to the digital extortionists. While many other antivirus programs fall short in preventing this, Avira comes through with its Ransomware Protection feature. By monitoring suspicious processes and behavior in the background, it’s able to prevent any attack by staying one step ahead of the hackers.
Phishing has also been pretty common lately, especially now that so many people are working from home due to the global pandemic. If you’ve received a suspicious email that invites you to click on a link or open an attachment, there’s a high chance that it could be a phishing attempt. Phishing is basically a scam used to try and steal your password, Social Security numbers, account numbers, and other personal information. Avira helps by offering both Web Guard and Mail Protection that blocks infected websites, phishing links, and spam.
Avira also packs a bunch of extra features, such as file encryption, file recovery, file shredding, disk defragmenter, and more. If you’re a gamer, you will also love Avira’s Game Booster Mode, that suspends non-urgent notifications like an antivirus alert or update request for a more seamless gaming experience.
User Interface and Performance
While Avira has different interfaces for different products, all of them are really easy to use and require no complicated setup process. The entire installation and setup procedure is pretty straightforward even for a total layman. There’s a huge button on the main page for quick scans with full and custom options available in the scan tab. It also has minimal impact on your system, so it won’t slow down your computer unlike many other antivirus products.
In terms of performance, Avira always make it on the list of independent testing labs such as AV-comparatives and AV-Test. This is hardly surprising considering its 30-year history. In an October 2021 test conducted by AV-Test, Avira antivirus scored an above industry average rating of 99.8% for protection against 0-day malware attacks, web, and email threats. It also gained a perfect score in malware detection.
Licenses and Packages
Avira offers three different security bundles to cater to its large number of users:
Avira Antivirus Pro In addition to what Avira’s free security suite offers, the Pro edition includes Mail Protection, Web Protection, and access to both email and phone support. You also won’t be constantly bombarded by pop-up ads thanks to its built-in ad blocker.
Avira Internet Security Suite is pretty much everything you get from the Pro Edition plus a software upgrader and a password manager.
Lastly, while the Pro and Security Suite versions only offer coverage for 1, 3, or 5 devices, Avira Prime offers the option to get unlimited device coverage. In addition, you also get VIP Support, a VPN with unlimited bandwidth, System Speedup Pro, premium mobile apps, and more. If you're serious about your protection, Avira Prime should be your bundle of choice - it's only slightly more expensive but gives you full coverage for any threat that may pop up.
About the Company
Headquartered in Tettnang, Germany, Avira is a software developer that provides antivirus, security, and privacy for computers, mobile devices, servers, and networks. Although the company’s offering has expanded over the years to include other services such as a VPN and software upgrader, it is still best known for the flagship Avira antivirus. Avira Operations was founded in 2006 but the antivirus itself has been in development since 1986, so technically, it has been around for over 30 years. In 2012, Avira was proclaimed as the 6th largest antivirus vendor with more than 100 million users worldwide.
Avira’s Support page on its website is well-organized with related articles, updates, videos, and even a community page. You can either browse the articles or use the search button to ask your question. Avira offers both email and phone support but take note that these options are available only for those who purchased paid-for products. There’s also a toll-free number for premium users but it’s not available 24/7.
Unfortunately, Avira does not offer chat support which is a bummer especially for people who don’t like being on the phone. Turn around time for email inquiries wasn’t so great either. It took customer support 3 days to get back to us and succeeding emails even longer. On the other hand, our phone support experience turned out great. We were put through to a representative in just a couple of minutes and the agent was friendly, polite, and resolved our issue in a concise manner.
Although we find Avira’s customer support lacking, it did more than make up for it with its wide range of security features and excellent malware detection rates. The software is also very intuitive and easy to use so you probably won't need the help of customer support. System slowdown is also minimal so you’ll hardly even notice Avira hard at work while you’re playing a game, rendering video, or doing other processor-intensive tasks. Overall, we find this antivirus software reliable and a great value for money especially if you get the more advanced packages.
